The Tax Blog
The latest news, insights and tips about taxes

Welcome to The Tax Blog

No matter how you feel about taxes, for the most part, they impact nearly every corner of our lives. And every day, it seems, there’s a new twist – a policy change, a local levy, a new retirement saving strategy – that could affect how much we pay today and in the future. Sorting through it all takes an expert – or, perhaps, more than one.

That’s where we come in. The Tax Blog brings together Dow Jones’s team of award-winning tax journalists from The Wall Street Journal, Smart Money, MarketWatch and Dow Jones Newswires to examine the tax issues, changes and legislation that affect families, investors and small business owners.

Our contributors include Tax Report columnist Laura Saunders (WSJ), Bill “The Tax Guy” Bischoff (SmartMoney.com), wealth management writer Arden Dale and personal finance reporter Jillian Mincer (Dow Jones Newswires). As news breaks, we’ll have posts from other reporters in the Dow Jones family as well as guest columnists and tax professionals who can weigh in swiftly and offer insights. There’s nothing in the financial world that taxes don’t touch, and there’s nothing in the financial world that Dow Jones doesn’t cover.

These experts will provide the latest news and insight, mine the tax code for tips and loopholes, and answer your questions about tricky tax situations. We hope you’ll offer your own insights and comments–and join other readers in what we hope will be a lively and robust community of the tax-obsessed.

Welcome–and enjoy!

    • Now that the “Tax Reduction Extension ” has passed will the $1500 energy credit also be extended to 2012 ?

    • I converted my 401K to a rollover IRA in March 2010. When can I convert a portion of the Rollover IRA to a ROTH IRA? SEA

    • Are any of you aware of any tax software for a Mac that will generate a Form 1041 return (estate income tax). Neither Turbotax nor HR Block software has this capability for Macs. Thanks!

    • My husband 70 years old and I, 69 years old have a little over 1.2 million dollars in IRA’s invested in 65% bonds, MM, CD’s and 35 % in stocks. We do not have much money outside of our IRA”s. Is it still worth converting a portion to Roth IRA considering our conservative investments weighing projected income against the taxes we have to pay for the conversion? I am planning to open 2 Roth IRA’s after conversion of $100,000 for a starter this year to avail of splitting taxes for the year 2011 and 2012. We keep our withdrawals to 4% which also satisfies our MRD’s.
