As colleges upgrade their health plans to comply with the Affordable Care Act, some students (or their parents) may end up paying higher premiums.
New regulations require the phasing out of caps on benefits, coverage of certain “essential” services and the elimination of co-pays for preventive care, including contraceptives. To cover these extra costs, several colleges have raised the price of their health plans. Others, particularly smaller schools, are choosing to drop coverage altogether.
Even though the law doesn’t go fully into effect until 2014, some schools have already brought their plans into compliance. Cornell University, for example, this year raised premiums 5% – or $100 – for a plan with no limit on annual benefits or prescription drug coverage, and no co-pay for preventive care. The University of New Hampshire, which made similar upgrades, raised premiums about 7%. However, school officials say the rate hike is similar to its typical annual increase.
College plans that already offered comprehensive benefits will keep rates fairly stable this year, while some schools whose plans had low coverage limits had to raise premiums by as much as 200%.
“There’s been a voluntary movement to have more plans in compliance,” says Cindy McGahey, director of finance and administration at the University of New Hampshire and head of the insurance benefits plans coalition at the American College Health Association. She expects most college plans to change as a result of the regulations and to increase premiums in line with the higher quality coverage, depending on how good the plan was to begin with.
But the higher prices also put a greater onus on students to know their options, since schools often require students to have some form of insurance, say experts. There’s an effort to “educate young people on how to be good consumers of health insurance, which is not something they always think about,” says Jenny Haubenreiser, president of the American College Health Association and director of health promotion at Montana State. The school plan is often the best deal, but she advises students to consider the alternatives: “If there’s a better deal, take it. We’re not in the business of health insurance here.”
STAY ON PARENTS’ PLAN
The Affordable Care Act allows students to stay on their parents’ plan until they’re 26, which has kept more than 3 million people between 19 and 25 insured as of June, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. And the cost of adding another member to the family plan is generally cheaper than purchasing an individual policy. But experts warn students to beware of their parents’ plans limitations — out-of-state students may find it hard to find in-network providers near their school, and need to weigh the cost of paying higher premiums to go outside the network against the convenience of receiving care near campus.
LOOK AT THE STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN
While new regulations ensure a higher level of quality for college insurance plans, how schools implement the provisions will vary – as will the prices of the plans.
Colleges are required to provide free preventive care, including birth control, but they might stipulate that students purchase generic drugs or use the university’s health services to receive full coverage. Experts advise students and their parents to study up on the new requirements and look closely at their college plan’s policy and how much it will cost.
OTHER OPTIONS
Students with jobs might be able to purchase a more affordable health plan through their employer. They could also buy individual health insurance, though experts warn that these plans will likely be the most expensive option until 2014, when health-care exchanges will create a commercial marketplace for insurance under the Affordable Care Act. Students may also be eligible for Medicaid coverage.
GETTING ADVICE
Students can usually get guidance about their health insurance options by approaching their campus insurance administrator or health services office. “There is almost always somebody who really gets this within the health service,” says Haubenreiser.

Free Facebook Icons That You Can Integrate To Your Website

Due to the extreme popularity of Facebook, most, if not all, blogs and websites now use a Facebook icon on their page. Social networking sites are excellent marketing and advertising platforms that can help you effectively promote your website. And because of this, website and blog owners choose to link their official webpage to their Facebook profile or fan page. Wait a minute! We were promised that Obamacare would REDUCE health insurance costs. Surely it cannot be true that meeting Obamacare requirements is RAISING health insurance costs. That would mean that our president and his party lied to us–or at a minimum did not have a clue what they were doing.
At least 45 percent of us know that cannot be the case, because we already have decided to vote for his reelection. So even if the facts here are true, we don’t want to know! We prefer being ignorant of facts and hence possessing full confidence in our nation’s current leaders.
