Pay Dirt
A daily look at what we buy, how we spend, and the companies that do right - and wrong - by their customers.

The Dark Knight Rises — to $100 Per Ticket

———

How much would you pay to see the midnight show of “The Dark Knight Rises” on July 20? Scalpers are betting quite a lot.

Asking prices for opening night tickets on Craigslist hit the $100-per-ticket mark in New York. On eBay, a Los Angeles seller wants $125 apiece, and another in Council Bluffs, Iowa is asking $140. And if you really want to be among the first to see it, there’s an eBay listing for two tickets to a 7 p.m. showing on July 19 in Los Angeles. The price: $300.

As we reported earlier this year, some theaters introduced and swiftly sold out of IMAX tickets for the movie in January. In recent weeks, theaters in various markets reported even more sold-out midnight showings for regular and IMAX showings of “The Dark Knight Rises.” The allure: getting to see the movie first and in the company of other avid, and possibly costumed, fans.

For perspective, the $100 asking price is just shy of what a concertgoer might pay for a seat at Madison Square Garden to see Madonna ($147) or Justin Bieber ($120), reports comparison site FanSnap.com. “It would get you some pretty good tickets to a Yankees-Red Sox matchup, too,” says chief executive Mike Janes.

To be fair, the pie-in-the sky prices are outliers in the overall market. There are plenty of sellers hawking tickets in the still-overpriced $25 to $40 range, but those are mostly regular (i.e., not IMAX) seats. If a regular showing is acceptable, there’s likely little need to pay any more than face value. In New York, for example, the AMC Theatre location in Times Square has a sold-out 12:01 a.m. showing, but there are still seats for 12:07 a.m.

If you want IMAX, the Huffington Post found a few theaters that, as of late last week, still had midnight seats available at face value.

    • just wanna thank you guys for giving my son such a faisattnc time this weekend at butlins. We were wandering if you were gonna be coming to Skegness?Minehead is quite a long way for us from Leicester, but this weekend was soooooo worth it.Will you be touring anywhere near Leicester also?We would love to see all you guys again .Thanks again Charliene and Caylon (age 5 )

    • I’ll see it when it hits one of the few remaining second run theaters for a dollar or 2.. or when I can get the dvd from NF for $9 a month.

    • How much do you want to bet that 90% of the folks who pay this can’t really afford to based on their income and expectations.

But certain governmental leaders continue to insist on collectivist fiscal thinking.

    • “Stupid is what stupid does.”

    • If people are willing to pay that much, they are retarded.

About Pay Dirt

  • Pay Dirt examines the millions of consumer decisions Americans make every day: What to buy, how much to pay, whether to rave or complain. Lead written by Quentin Fottrell, the blog examines these interactions, providing readers with news, insight and tips on shopping, spending, customer service, and companies that do right – and wrong – by their customers. Send items, questions and comments to quentin.fottrell@dowjones.com or tweet @SMPayDirt.
