Pay Dirt
A daily look at what we buy, how we spend, and the companies that do right - and wrong - by their customers.

Priceline: Book at the 11th Hour, Save 35%

iStockphoto
Priceline is moving into the last-minute deals market.

Have you ever made one of those nerve-wracking “Name Your Own Price” blind bookings on Priceline.com and ended up in a drab hotel on the edge of town?

I have. And it wasn’t pretty. But now some travelers using the site can avoid making a similar mistake.

Priceline’s new “Tonight-Only Deals” app, released today for the iPhone and iPod Touch, offers rates of up to 35% off at three- and four-star properties and — wait for it – you can see the hotel name before you book. Normally on Priceline, if you want to see the name of the hotel, you don’t get a discount. USAToday.com reports that deals are currently available in 34 cities, including New York and Chicago.

But there’s a trade-off for knowing where you’ll rest your head prior to clicking “purchase.” The site’s usual promise, when you book blind, is up to 60% off. Using the app for peace of mind costs you that discount difference. Getting a “Tonight-Only Deal” isn’t without strings, either. The app isn’t available to users on Android or other smartphone operating systems. Plus, you must book the room on the day you plan to check in, with plans to stay no more than four nights. Of course, savvy travelers could book a hotel for tonight and book another hotel at 35% off four days later, or just pay the standard price for a hotel room without any restrictions. Brian Ek, spokesman for Priceline, says 70% of Priceline customers are same-day bookers. “It’s for the untethered traveler,” he says.

As I reported for Pay Dirt when my own Priceline blind booking in New York went awry: The “Name Your Own Price” service makes subtle – but game-changing – alterations to the area listings: “Soho/Tribeca” becomes “Soho/Tribeca/Financial District” and, more subtly, “Chelsea Village” becomes “Chelsea Area.” (Ek says the changes are clearly stated.)

Untethered travelers and journey planners, which discount suits you?

About Pay Dirt

  • Pay Dirt examines the millions of consumer decisions Americans make every day: What to buy, how much to pay, whether to rave or complain. Lead written by Quentin Fottrell, the blog examines these interactions, providing readers with news, insight and tips on shopping, spending, customer service, and companies that do right – and wrong – by their customers.
