Choosing Your 9/11 Charity

iStockphoto

Now that the pomp and circumstance of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is over and the World Trade Center memorial is officially open, many people are left wondering how they can make their own commemorative gesture to those who died.

Most charities focusing on 9/11 get a clean bill of health. An Associated Press survey of 325 9/11 charities identified several smaller charities that failed badly, but added, “Most of the 325 charities identified by the AP followed the rules.” David Campbell, chair of the public administration department at the College of Community and Public Affairs at Binghamton University, NY, reviewed 258 9/11 charities, which raised nearly $680 million.

As outlined by SmartMoney.com, treat your choice like a business decision. Is the charity transparent? Charity Navigator says 75% of a charity’s budget should go to the program. It gives its highest four-star rating to 9/11 programs of Scholarship America, which provides college scholarships for children of those who died, and Robin Hood Foundation, which focuses on mental health issues and alleviating poverty. Both existed prior to 9/11.

But experts say charities often work best when leaders have connections with those they wish to help. The Families of September 11 aims to raise awareness about security issues. Campbell worked with Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund, which raised money to provide an education fund for the children of hospitality industry workers. “The goal is to pay for education until the youngest children of those killed graduate from college in 2024,” he says.

Of course, there will be organizations out there that are neither legitimate nor responsible. The New York Attorney General’s Office issued this warning for avoiding poorly run organizations and scams. Sandra Miniutti, CFO at Charity Navigator, says, “It’s very difficult to create a new charity and make it successful.”And, before settling on a cause, Campbell suggests the following question: “What is it about 9/11 that means most to you?”
