How to Prove We Own Our Home?

Question: My wife and I recently paid off our mortgage and are now debt-free. Will we get any proof that we are the owners of our home?

— Timothy Aussem, Ottawa, Ill.

Answer: Nice going. After toasting your accomplishment, you’ll want to ask your mortgage lender for a “satisfaction of mortgage” statement or similar document, says Vicki Vidal, vice president of loan administration at trade group Mortgage Bankers Association. For those who have paid off all their home-related debt (including any home-equity loan or second mortgage), that statement, which may include the loan number and information about the deed and title, contains language stating that the loan has been paid. “You can use that to show the powers that be that you own the place free and clear,” says J. Philip Faranda, principal in a Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., real estate brokerage.
