Real-Time Advice
Our real-time advice on how market shifts and news impact you and your money

Did Apple Tame the Salesman?

    • this is a riot. no biz makes $$ by offering solutions that do not involve a sale and/or just chatting with a potential customer for 2 hours and have them walk out.
years back i worked as an inbound telesale rep for pc connection. at first it was a chatty fun place. talk w/callers about computer stuff for as long as it took. explore options, read specs w/them, etc.
that lasted until cdw, tiger and other began to eat pc connection’s lunch on sales – not necessairly on price. soon things changed and no more chatty kathys. make a sale or adios.
apple has a niche market now but nobody stays on top for ever.

    • Sales is not sales if you are not closing. You have to build a relationship but that is just one of the first steps in sales “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”. I have been in sales for over a decade and can say that in life you are always closing or being closed even if you don’t know it.

    • I highly doubt other companies will be able to successfully implement these changes. Everybody loves getting a deal, and everybody knows the margins are too high in “haggle-free” prices.

    • Maybe it’s just me, but I am put off by too friendly sales people. We all know they want to sell us something, not become our best friend. And calling me by my first name is a real deal-breaker for me. You don’t know me. Don’t put a false front on waht this is: I want to buy something/you want to sell something. Respect me and perhaps you will get the sale. Treat me like an imbecile, and I walk.

    • It really comes done to what the salesperson knows about that specific product for me. If they can’t answer my product questions on the front end, I know they can’t handle problems that may arise after the sale. Companies that properly train their sales teams will sell more than their under-trained competitors. Being kind, listening, etc….that should be common place. I would never buy something I needed from anyone who treated me less than professionally.

    • I was pleasantly surprised by ATT’s customer services at their retail shop over the recent years. Representatives were very polite and courteous. They hold your purchase bag for you and open the door for you on the way out. Their eyes always maintains eye contact, which I feel important and being respected. The experience was better than at LV or Gucci boutique.

    • While I like the idea of concierge, people usually go into Apple with the mind of purchasing something. So they don’t need to close – they need to provide customer service so that the buyer, especially a new customer, is impressed by it enough to make that decision to buy. It doesn’t need to be a hard sell so you don’t need sales people. Can’t say the same for other retailers. hahaha

    • most of you are entirely missing the point. of course close… dont over hire salesmen and drown the customer with greasy service. be real, if you base everything on commissions customers stop coming because they cant shop… they feel borderline harassed. apple isnt the only one using this philosophy. look at the carmax no haggle price approach that has taken the used car industry by storm.

    • There is no such thing as closing the sale there is only manipulation on the customer. I’m not a apple fan but I have always believed in their approach. If you walk into my store its because something interest you and I’m going to make that interesting product the most interesting product to you not try to sell you something you don’t need because on a commission…

    • like Jessica explained I cannot believe that any one able to profit $8234 in four weeks on the computer. have you read this site link (Click on menu Home more information) http://goo.gl/ZrLvs

    • I like soft sales, but I don’t like the first name trend that companies are adopting. When I walk into a coffee shop, I just want a coffee, I don’t want to constantly introduce myself to the person who is making it. Maybe it’s cold on my part, but I’m already giving them my money, why should I give them my name too?

    • This is a hoot…”There is no such thing as closing the sale there is only manipulation on the customer…” spoken from a position of extreme fear and insecurity. Wow. Most people who buy, can’t really put their finger on exactly WHY the purchased. They want to be smart, calculating and in control. Retail and transaction, run-rate based sales is on the downward trend – but higher-end, more sophisticated, complex decision making will always require a trusted “guide” through the process…

    • what Jason said I am in shock that a mother able to make $9513 in one month on the computer. did you read this web page (Click on menu Home more information) http://goo.gl/amlC3

    • If a store employee is truly helpful to me in a situation where I don’t end up buying on that occasion, I’m much more likely to return there when I am ready to make a purchase, rather than a place where I was blown off because they couldn’t squeeze something out of me at that minute. While I am turned off by salespeople who treat me with a one-size-fits-all type of false friendliness, I do appreciate someone who accurately reads my level of knowledge & sophistication about the product & treats me accordingly, not talking down to me in areas where I’m clearly knowledgeable, & being truly informative, but not exploitive, in an area where I’m less experienced.

    • Sure wish Staples would have considered this approach.

    • Apple has the cool factor. It’s hard to recreate. Just because a company thinks they can doesn’t mean they can. I don’t think a Best Buy could ever be considered cool. It’s because the top management there is not honest and sincere so it filters down all the way from the top to the bottom. Employees always accurately reflect the people in charge. You can discern everything about the president of a company by his staff.

    • It cannot be!

Hide $ Show Buttons with Sencha Touch
      June 12th, 2011
      Phillip
I’m currently building a demo for work using Sencha Touch mobile JavaScript framework, and needed to change the state of some buttons dependent on which ‘card’ is shown.
The Doc Api is a little hard to follow in my opinion, but I eventually worked it out.
In hindsight I guess I could have used a single button to do this, but I will demonstrate it with two.
To demonstrate this I’m going to use a Panel, with the buttons to flick between the cards. Instead of using a TabPanel.
So to start with I have a Panel, with a ToolBar docked to the bottom, a couple of buttons, and two cards.
      var rootPanel;
      Ext.setup( В В В В onReady: function () В В В В В В В В rootPanel = new Ext.Panel( В В В В В В В В В В В В fullscreen: true, В В В В В В В В В В В В layout: ‘card’, В В В В В В В В В В В В style: ‘background-color:lightblue;’, В В В В В В В В В В В В dockedItems: [ В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  В

      iSyncit
iSyncIt is a small menu bar application that allows you to sync your devices more easily and quickly than just using iSync alone. iSyncIt has the ability to automatically turn your bluetooth on and off, saving you power if you are using a laptop. It also has a built in scheduler to allow you to set up automatic syncing of your devices.
To reduce the amount of space needed on your menu bar iSyncIt also contains an, albeit limited, bluetooth menu, allowing you to use iSyncIt as a replacement for your bluetooth menu bar item.
This software requires OS X 10.5, PPC or Intel processors and for all of your devices to have been synced at least once in iSync.
In Mac OS it is only possible (as far as I am aware) to control the power of internal bluetooth dongles, those provided by Apple, therefore automatic bluetooth control will not function with external dongles. However, the scheduling and syncing functions of iSyncIt will continue to work as normal.

      Set Icon
Set Icon is a small application that lets you quickly and easily set a custom icon for one your drives either from an ICNS file or any old image file that Mac OS supports.
Just select your drive, drag an image file to the image area and click ‘Set Icon’, when you want to remove the custom icon just select the drive, check the ‘Remove Custom Icon’ box and click ‘Remove Icon’.
All images are scaled to fit within the constraints of a 512×512 icon.
Set Icon applies custom icons in such a way that they appear correctly both in (Snow) Leopard’s side bar and in the Boot Camp chooser.

      Kill Dashboard
Kill Dashboard is a basic Automator action to shut down Dashboard after use. it allows you to free up RAM and processor cycles without permanently disabling Dashboard. It should work on all Tiger platforms assuming you’ve done no dodgy OS editing of your own. I have created this for people that do not wish to write their own AppleScript or Automator actions.
