Real-Time Advice
Our real-time advice on how market shifts and news impact you and your money

FaceTime May Devour Data Plans

Apple will soon allow its FaceTime chat to be used over cellular networks instead of just Wi-Fi. But analysts caution these video calls could eat up some users’ monthly data allotments in under two hours.

The tweak to Facetime was announced Monday along with a slew of other hardware and software updates.  FaceTime works much like Skype – except both parties need an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to chat. But those with the base data plans should use the technology sparingly, analyst Jeff Kagan says. “If you use FaceTime on the wireless network, you better keep a close eye on your data plan,” he says.

In fact, users with a 250 megabyte data plan could max out their data plan in just 90 minutes using FaceTime, says Todd Day, senior industry analyst in the mobile and wireless division at Frost and Sullivan. Each minute of FaceTime chat can use as much as 2.7 mb of data, he says.

Voice calls are on the decline, experts say, and video chat provides a lucrative way for carriers to compensate for that. The average length of a local call has fallen more than 50% over the last decade to around 1.8 minutes, according CTIA-The Wireless Association, and a  third of Americans said they’d rather text than call, according to a study by Pew Research Center. Analysis by Cisco Systems estimates that video – chat and downloads – will account for 60% of total network traffic by the end of 2012.

Cellular FaceTime will help push up monthly bills and “throttle” or reduce the data speed for those with unlimited data, says Scott Sutherland, a senior analyst at Wedbush Securities. “New products like these will likely drive additional mobile data usage,” he says. The temptation to use FaceTime on the go will also be greater when Apple unveils the iPhone 5 later this year, which is expected to support high-speed “4G LTE” networks, he says.

Also See:

Meanwhile, carriers are eliminating unlimited data plans. AT&T and Verizon stopped offering the option for new customers last year and will move existing customers with unlimited data to usage-based billing when they renew their contracts. On Tuesday, Verizon offered a new data plan to cover 10 devices under one wireless contract for $50 a month – for one gigabyte of data. “If customers are using Wireless FaceTime, they need to have one of the larger plans,” Kagan says.

There are some exceptions: Sprint Mobile USA will offer the 16-gigabyte version of the latest iPhone with unlimited data from June 29. However, the carrier will sell it for $649, the same price as Apple. A spokeswoman for Sprint says there are no plans to move to tiered data plans for Smartphones. (Apple did not respond to requests for comment.) Kagan says carriers will start running out of wireless spectrum data next year. “All this wireless data is amazing, but there is a price to pay,” he says.
