make link button open a new tab

Hi All,
Can this also be done for a Link button within a grid view? i.e something like this to open in a new tab rather than a new window…i tried this and it returned a new window instead of a new tab!!
i also tried changing the target to "_new" still no luck and i am uisng IE7 browser..any suggestions please?

The built-in targets that are supported are these:
_blank – creates a new window of default size
_parent – targets the frameset in which the current page belongs
_self – targets the current window
_top – targets the main browser window, eliminating all frames
So when you do target="_new", you’re actually not referring to a built-in target, but rather you give the name of the new window "_new".
As you can see, there is no special target to differ between tab and window.
In Firefox, _blank target will open in a tab by default. Dunno how IE7 behaves here, but you might want to try _blank.

1. Opening in a new tab is entirely a browser setting. No solution is GUARANTEED to work in any and all of IE7, FF and Opera. Period.
2. If the browser is set up properly (with open links in tabs), setting target to _blank or using window.open(‘url’) will both work. The js is preferred as some believe that target mau cause validation issues.

Hi ShadowOfTheBeast,
Actually opening a new tab works the same as opening a new window. The setting is not in ASP.Net, it’s your IE browser’s preference. If you want to open new windows in a new tab. You just do the following step:
1, Click on Tools menu and select Internet Opinions
2, General->Tabs->Setting, click on it
3, When a pop-up is encountered–>select "Alway on pop-ups in a new tab" or "Let Internet Explore decide how pop-ups should open"

Hi Guys i looked at the Broswer settings after trying to resolve this and i found the Tab settings which is exactly what you have stated
