Real-Time Advice
Our real-time advice on how market shifts and news impact you and your money

Do Markets Need More Fed Support?

Stocks fell Tuesday on news the Federal Reserve is unlikely to stimulate the economy with another round of bond buying. But advisers are telling investors to stay put, and contend stocks could continue to have a strong year even without additional Fed support.

Fed minutes released Tuesday showed that while officials think the economic recovery is picking up pace, there are concerns about the job market. That took the fizzle out of equity markets, which came off multi-year highs: the Dow Jones Industrial average fell 64.94 points, or 0.5% to 13199.55, and the S&P 500 fell 6.13 points. But advisers say positive economic reports could push stocks past those highs later this year and they urged investors to stay put or increase their holdings.  “The market has been losing momentum but I think it’s a buying opportunity,” says Gary Thayer, chief macro strategist for Wells Fargo Advisors. “We remain optimistic.”

The Fed’s lack of desire to take further action is being prompted by good economic news, investor pros say — developments that could push stocks higher later this year. The labor market keeps improving, says Thayer, a shift the Fed acknowledged at its March meeting. Another sign stocks may still have room to run: when markets are peaking, interest rates are normally high and investors are worried about inflation, writes David Kelly, chief market strategist for J.P. Morgan Funds. Today, the Fed is pledging to keep rates low and inflation concerns remain tepid, he says.

That said, Fed officials also expressed concern that the jobs market might lose momentum as the year goes on. And some advisers recommend investors take gains following the strong first quarter. Also, the Fed may still be compelled to roll out more stimulus this year to help the sluggish housing market, says John Lonski, chief economist for Moody’s Analytics.

Still some experts say the economy is stable enough that any pullback this year will likely be mild. Thayer says investors should increase their stock holdings. He recommends investors focus on U.S. stocks over picks from other developed countries like Europe, and says he likes equities from emerging-market countries, where economic growth is stronger than in the U.S.
