Real-Time Advice
Our real-time advice on how market shifts and news impact you and your money

Stocks Hit All-Time High (Sort Of)

The S&P 500 index of large U.S. companies finished Monday at 1419 and change, up a whopping 13% for the year. With another 10% climb it will retake its all-time high of just over 1565, reached on October 9, 2007.

By one measure, however, investors are already back to even. The S&P 500 index tracks only stock price movements, but the S&P 500 Total Return index, which includes dividend payments, hit its all-time high Monday.

An investor who put $10,000 in the total return index at its 2007 collected $942 in dividend payments, offsetting $934 in share price losses, according to Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P.

That doesn’t include taxes and fees, but the maximum dividend tax rate has been capped at 15% during that time, and the cheapest mutual funds that track the S&P 500 index cost less than $10 a year per $10,000 invested.

The results illustrate how dividends can significantly affect returns. Since the start of 2000, the S&P 500 lost 3%, but with dividends reinvested it’s up 21%. Since 1990, share price gains alone have turned a $10,000 investment in the S&P 500 into $40,154, while the same investment with dividends reinvested is now worth $64,550.

That’s not to say investors should load up on high-yield shares at the expense of growth potential. The stock market’s highest yields are often attached to slow-growing or struggling companies whose share prices have been held down by investor pessimism. Such companies can be a risk for dividend cuts, or worse.

But dividend-paying stocks have historically provided better returns than those that don’t pay dividends. From 1972 through last year, dividend payers in the S&P 500 returned 8.6% a year, on average, versus 1.4% for non-dividend payers, according to research from Allianz Global Investors.

Investors can buy into a mix of companies with a record of dividend growth through exchange-traded funds like Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (VIG) and iShares Dow Jones Select Dividend Index (DVY).

There’s good news even for investors who own a broad S&P 500 fund. Last year a record number of index members initiated dividend payments. This year, payments for the index are expected to grow by 15%.
