AAPL After Steve Jobs

Shareholders must now decide if Apple can stand on its own. / Getty Images

With the news of visionary inventor Steve Jobs’ death yesterday, longtime Apple investors who’ve reaped vast financial rewards from the Mac computer, iPod music player, iPhone and iPad must now decide if Jobs’s greatest creation–Apple (APPL) itself–can stand on its own.

Wall Street analysts are optimistic.

“The culture of innovation, thinking different, risk taking, and execution . . . will live on,” wrote Shaw Wu, an analyst with Sterne Agee, in a Monday note to investors confirming his “buy” recommendation.  According to Wu, platforms like the App Store, where large corporations and hobbyists alike can sell programs for Apple products, and iCloud, a new remote storage service that will allow Apple gadgets to sync documents, calendars and pictures automatically, position Apple to build on its product success in the coming decade.

Michael Walkley, who covers the stock for Canaccord Genuity, is similarly bullish. “Jobs and Apple’s executive team have built an unparalleled talent base and corporate culture that sets the table for future success and innovation,” he wrote Sunday.  Global market penetration for the iPhone, iPad and Mac is “relatively low,” setting Apple up for years of strong earnings growth, according to Walkley.

The numbers should offer investors comfort.  Apple sells for 14 times projected earnings for its fiscal 2011, which ends later this month.  That’s close to the broad market’s price.   But Apple’s momentum is anything but average.  It has smashed through earnings forecasts by an average of more than 20% over the past four quarters.  Wall Street has been nudging its fiscal 2012 earnings forecasts higher at a time when most companies’ forecasts are being trimmed.

The most recent poll of estimates has Apple’s earnings jumping 23% next year.  This, as Goldman Sachs expects Europe to enter an economic recession in coming months and the U.S. to come close.

And Apple sits on cash and investments worth more than 15% of its stock market value.  If the share price falls, that’s money that can be spent on repurchases and dividends to lure investors.  If it doesn’t, it’s plenty of money for opportunistic buyouts–like last year’s purchase of Siri, an artificial intelligence specialist, for a reported $200 million, which made possible the addition of a natural voice personal assistant to the newest iPhone.

But there’s one thing the numbers can’t show.  That’s the degree to which the power of Jobs’s personality was a marketing edge for the gadgets.  People like irreverence.  Jobs one wrote, “Just avoid holding it that way” in en email responding to a question about the iPhone “death grip,” which caused reception to fail when a user held it just so. People like irony.  Long before it became America’s most valuable firm, Apple once accepted a small cash bailout from Microsoft (MSFT).  They like a good show.  What kind of man gets millions of customers to watch hour-long videos of its product conferences, and commands the media’s attention while responding to few of its requests for comment?

Is Apple a worse investment for Jobs’s death?  Of course it is.  But it nonetheless looks promising–one more credit to his remarkable life.
